Puttur, Jul 16: Uppinangady police station in the taluk has received a complaint that gold ornaments weighing over 45 sovereigns have been stolen from the house of Suresh K, an ex-serviceman settled in Karaya village. Suresh currently happens to be an entrepreneur.

The former defence officer runs a paints-cum-hardware store named Gajanana Store at Uppinangady. The thieves opened different cupboards and took away a number of gold ornaments besides a cellphone valued at Rs 10,000.

It is said that Suresh is in the habit of keeping the valuables in bank locker and brought them home only when necessary for functions. For some function, the ornaments had been brought home a few days back. As the ornaments were not promptly returned to the bank locker, the thieves reaped a bounty, it is gathered.

Suresh and his family members were wide awake till 2.30 am on Saturday because his son was suffering from high fever. Thereafter, they went to sleep. In the morning, they found that both the front and rear doors of the house were wide open. Initially the family members thought they would have forgotten to close the doors because of tension relating to the son's ill health. However, on finding that a bag belonging them was in the courtyard, they suspected foulplay.

However, there were no signs of any force having been used for entering the house or opening the cupboards. There is a possibility that the thief would have entered the home before nightfall, hid himself somewhere and stole valuables after they went to sleep.

Uppinangady police, who have registered a case, are investigating.
