Udupi: Laboratory service departments at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal receive NABL accreditation

Udupi, May 14: Kasturba Hospital Laboratory services at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal received the prestigious National Accreditation Board for testing and calibration Laboratories (NABL) certificate. The NABL accreditation includes the diagnostic laboratory services namely the Hematology and Clinical Pathology Laboratory, Clinical Biochemistry, Histopathology & Cytopathology and Microbiology & Serology at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal.

The certificate of NABL Accreditation was handed over by Dr H S Ballal, pro-chancellor MAHE, Manipal to C G Muthana, COO Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Dr Vinod Bhat, vice-chancellor MAHE, Dr Poornima Baliga, pro vice-chancellor MAHE, Dr Pragna Rao, dean KMC Manipal, Dr Sharath Rao, associate dean KMC Manipal, Dr Chiranjay Mukhopadhyay, associate dean KMC Manipal, Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent, Dr Chethan Manohar, director, Lab Services, and the heads of all laboratory departments from Kasturba Hospital, Manipal were present.

Dr H S Ballal, pro-chancellor MAHE said, “The NABL accreditation adds a feather in the cap of Diagnostic Laboratory services at Kasturba Hospital. It operates with highest level of precision and accuracy. It is known and operates as the referral lab in this region.”

NABL evaluates the laboratory, the tests and its reports based on the documentation of process, training of laboratory personnel, safety practices, time, proper biomedical waste management and various other requirements. The laboratory tests have to meet stringent internal and external quality control practices.

Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent Kasturba Hospital Manipal said, “The inspection by the NABL authorities to verify the facilities, qualified manpower resources and the quality standards took place in the month of December 2017 and the certificate was issued now. Some of laboratory services are offered round the clock. It is supported by Laboratory information system by providing online reports for quick availability for the consultants thereby reducing the time required to start patient treatment.”
